Diagnostic Considerations

Diagnosis of acute focal bacterial nephritis (AFBN) is often delayed because of the similarity in presentation to acute pyelonephritis (APN).  AFBN can be differentiated by its higher and more persistent fever, peri-umblical pain, pain in the right or left quadrant and the presence of Murphy's sign during an abdominal examination.
